The Power of effective communication in recruitment
In the fast-paced and, at times, chaotic world of recruitment, effective communication, no matter how simple, can be a driver for successful relationships and placements. The lack or absence of communication can be frustrating for both recruiters and candidates throughout the recruitment process. That is why it is important to remember that communication in recruitment is not just about giving information, it is also about building connections, fostering trust, and helping people succeed.
In my years in recruitment talking and engaging with hundreds of candidates, here are the top communication practices I champion for both recruiters and candidates.
For Recruiters:
- Clarity, transparency, and integrity: When connecting with candidates, be clear and honest about the job opportunity and the responsibilities, requirements, and benefits that come with it. Never mislead a candidate with false information or promises just so they would engage with you. Be open to answering questions and clarifications, and never overwhelm them with too much unnecessary information.
- Set up clear and actionable deadlines: When working within time constraints, communicate target dates clearly to candidates. Give them sufficient time so they can make an informed decision or response. In return, make sure to provide timely feedback or response. This fosters mutual respect and accountability.
- Provide regular updates: If there are or aren't any significant updates, inform the candidates. Even if they weren’t chosen for the role, let them know. I understand that it can be sometimes difficult for recruiters to break bad news, but it is something we must do. Keeping them informed about their job application status will help them better manage their job search process. It can also alleviate job search stress.
- Constructive feedback: If a candidate isn't selected, provide helpful feedback when possible. This can help them in future applications and leave a positive impression of your company.
- Empathetic support: Rejection is a natural part of recruitment for both sides. Candidates often feel frustrated or disappointed when not selected for the role. While providing feedback is important, equally relevant is offering empathetic support. Being present, actively listening, sharing some motivations, and allowing candidates to vent can help them process rejection better and maintain their confidence.
For Candidates:
- Acknowledge receipt: When a recruiter reaches out about a potential job, a simple acknowledgment goes a long way. If you are interested, let them know. Even if you're not interested, a brief “Thank you, but I’m not looking for new opportunities right now” is appreciated. You can even refer someone you know who might be a good fit.
- Be honest and direct: If you're interested in a role and would like to learn more, say so. If you have reservations or need more information, express that clearly, and don’t hesitate to ask questions. Clear communication sets the right expectations and saves time for both parties. However, avoid making rushed decisions, especially if you feel pressured. Making career moves requires careful consideration.
- Timely communication: Respond to messages and calls within a reasonable timeframe. If you need more time to consider an offer or prepare for an interview, communicate this to the recruiter.
- Follow-Up: When asking questions, after job interviews, skill assessments, and any significant interactions, send a follow-up message if you haven’t heard from them for a while. Request feedback so you’ll know what your next move is. This shows your interest and professionalism.
- Keep your contact info in your resume updated: A simple yet important tip for effective communication between candidates and recruiters. Make sure to keep your contact information in your resume updated so recruiters can get in touch with you. This small detail can make a big difference like preventing missed opportunities.
The Benefits of Effective Communication:
- Builds strong and long-lasting connections that could result in mutual growth
- It saves time for both the candidate and the recruiter
- Reduces recruitment and job search-related stress for both parties
- Improves your decision-making
- Highlights your strong communication skills which is a highly sought-after soft skill among recruiters and candidates
