How to ace job interviews in 2025
In 2023, Asia Recruit published an article on a similar topic and we recognise the need for an updated version to help job candidates, either new graduates or experienced job seekers, adapt to and thrive in the evolving job interview process.
In this guide, we reveal our top job interview strategies for 2025 with the fundamental do’s and don’ts.
Key strategies for interview success in 2025 (In-Person & Online):
- Create a genuine connection from start to finish - It’s normal be nervous before, and even during job interviews. However, it’s important to manage how you’re feeling to connect genuinely. Greet the interviewer with confidence and speak clearly. Observe body language because their demeanor can give you cues on how to proceed. Once the interview starts, be an active listener and focus on key points they highlight. Avoid interrupting them when they are asking questions. Throughout the interview, be genuine and confident. This will make the job interview engaging and natural.
- Handle difficult job interview questions effectively - If a question is unclear, ask for clarification or more information. If you don’t have the answer, be honest and graceful about it. Stay calm and offer a follow-up. Turn that setback into a learning opportunity.
- Learn storytelling with impact - One of the most common job interview tips you’ll get is to not over-communicate with your answers. Instead of lengthy responses, craft concise work narratives that highlight your problem-solving and adaptability skills. This practice also showcases your communication skills and put emphasis on your growth and lessons you’ve learned.
- Ask insightful and well-researched questions - Thoroughly research the company and the role. Research key industry trends and developments that could impact your potential employer’s operations and in turn, your role. Ask about role expectations, key projects, development opportunities, and challenges. Inquire about how the role has evolved. Asking thoughtful questions shows genuine interest.
- Adapt to online job interview models - Be mindful of factors affecting online interviews. Ensure a stable internet connection, test your equipment, create a professional environment, minimise distractions, maintain a neat virtual presentation, and communicate clearly. Utilise presentation tools to showcase your background and skills. Familiarise yourself with common video interview software for a seamless experience and to improve your digital fluency.
Essential job interview do's:
- Be punctual (Physical or Virtual) - Arrive 10-15 minutes early, or even earlier for in-person interviews. For virtual interviews, join at least 10-20 minutes beforehand to check your equipment and address any technical issues.
- Dress appropriately - Always dress to impress, not only your employer, but yourself as well to feel more confident. Even for virtual interviews, dress formally. First impressions matter and they last.
- Do your research – Learn about the company's background, services, and the specifics of the role you're applying for. Avoid applying to numerous roles simultaneously without proper preparation for each.
- Make use of virtual advantages - During virtual interviews, you can discreetly place notes and reminders with key points to help you throughout the interview. However, ensure your delivery is not verbatim or rehearsed.
Critical job interview don'ts:
- Don't speak negatively about previous employers - Instead of criticising, focus on the skills and experiences gained from past roles. Every experience is an opportunity to learn and grow.
- Don't talk only about salary - While it's acceptable to inquire about salary, timing is crucial. Show your interest in the role and company first. Learn as much as you can about the role and how you can be a great asset. This will strengthen your position before asking about the compensation and benefits.
- Don't be too casual - Maintain professionalism, even if the interviewer is friendly. Stay confident, and your professionalism will come across effortlessly.
- Don't blindly memorise sample answers - You can structure your responses to highlight your own experiences and skills. To help you better structure your responses, use online resources as a guide. Keep it authentic.
Throughout job interviews, be genuine and build a rapport with the interviewer that makes the conversation engaging and more natural. By combining these strategies with fundamental best practices, you'll be well-equipped to ace your job interviews in 2025 and make a lasting positive impression.
